Chapter 8

Sunrays shone through the Cherry Blossom tree that stood behind Angela, illuminating the pink flowers. He gave her hands a firm squeeze when her brows furrowed in concentration. This would be her second attempt now to flash them out of Tokyo’s Shinjuku National Garden and back to New York.

“It’s not working.”

“Don’t give yourself a migraine. You look like you’re trying too hard.” They’d finally made it out of the bedroom—hell, out of the hotel—and spent the day touring the streets of Shinjuku before they came here. He would have been content for them to stay in bed all day, or in the kitchen, or maybe the shower again, repeating all the positions he’d taught her in the last forty-eight hours and probably trying new ones. It was like a sex marathon with Angela Corbett as the Olympian star. Deacon huffed. He hadn’t been this way since his teens.

It had been Angela’s idea that they go out today, and she wouldn’t take no for an answer. She made the most of their time out of bed. The subject of his childhood came up and he’d told her about the convent with that plump, mole-face Sister Mary. She seemed to enjoy listening to how he’d coped through life, living in the moment, going wherever his thoughts could take him.

Deacon watched her inhale another deep breath. Third time’s the charm, he thought. All the excitement and fun of the day now became bitter disappointment, all because she couldn’t flash. From the stress lines on her forehead, he could see she was trying really hard. He didn’t think he could stand to see her upset. He must do something to get that look of failure off her face.

White, gold and silver light flew around them. He saw her steal a peek through one eye, a small smile curving her mouth.

“New York. New York. New York.” Slow and deliberate, she chanted. They shook with a shift in movement then their bodies spun ’round. As the light faded, he didn’t bother to look at their surroundings, too enmeshed by the joy on her face.

“I can’t believe it,” she said on a laugh as her eyes shot around them. “I got us to New York. Not exactly the ideal place, but still—”

He finally let his gaze move from her. Nothing but tomb stone after tomb stone stood around him. A Cemetery? His flashes seem to be getting weirder each time. He put on a smile and turned her way. “You did it.”

She spun on her heel to face him. The excitement wasn’t the only thing to drain from her face, so did her colour. Deacon kept his head high, even though she looked at him conspicuously.

She bit her lower lip, and shook her head. “You did it, didn’t you?”

Of course, not. That was definitely you? Why would I do that? The sample of denials ran through his mind, but somehow couldn’t make it past his mouth. He released a hefty sigh. “Yes.” How pathetic did he sound? So much for being an incredible liar.
